The hallway became quiet.
Other families waiting nearby could hear parts of the conversation, while nurses occasionally passed through the area. Ben did not raise his voice. Emma did not either. But for the first time, she openly challenged her parents about how they had treated Rosie.
“You said you were protecting her,” Emma continued. “But you never asked what kind of life she wanted. You made decisions about her as though she couldn’t have a future of her own.”
Her parents insisted they had acted out of concern.
Emma answered that concern should never mean taking away someone’s dignity or assuming they could not make meaningful choices.
The argument ended when Rosie’s parents walked toward the elevators.
