Ben saw the expression on Emma’s face.
“I know what it looks like,” he said. “That’s why I brought it to you.”
He explained that he had discovered the arrangement after becoming engaged to Rosie. He had been deeply uncomfortable with the way her parents discussed her future, particularly when they spoke about her as though she were a problem that needed to be managed rather than an adult who deserved a voice in her own life.
Ben had signed certain documents because he believed that refusing to participate at that point could have left Rosie even more vulnerable. But he never intended to use the arrangement against her.
Instead, he spent years encouraging Rosie to understand her rights, participate in financial decisions, and have independent professional advice.
He had also kept copies of documents and communications because he wanted Rosie to have evidence if she ever decided to challenge the arrangement.
Emma’s anger slowly changed into something more complicated.
She was still uncomfortable that Ben had kept the situation secret.
