Then came another unexpected piece of wonderful news.
Rosie was pregnant with twins.
The excitement in the family was enormous. Everyone began imagining two little babies growing up surrounded by grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Ben became intensely focused on preparing for fatherhood, reading everything he could and making plans for the future.
But as the pregnancy progressed, complications developed.
At thirty-four weeks, Rosie suddenly needed emergency medical care. She was taken to the hospital while Ben followed close behind, frightened by how quickly everything had changed.
Doctors explained that they needed to act quickly to protect Rosie and the babies. The situation was serious, and nobody could promise Ben exactly how everything would unfold.
While medical staff worked, Ben remained in the hospital corridor with Emma.
He looked exhausted.
Then he reached into his bag and pulled out a folder.
“Rosie asked me to give you this if something happened and she couldn’t explain it herself,” he said quietly.
Emma stared at him.
Inside the folder was a legal document connected to Rosie’s family trust. Her parents had created an arrangement years earlier that was intended to control important aspects of Rosie’s financial future. They had argued that because Rosie had Down syndrome, she needed additional protection and supervision.
But the document went much further than Emma had realized.
It contained provisions that could significantly restrict Rosie’s independence while also providing financial incentives connected to the people responsible for managing her affairs.
Emma felt sick as she read it.
Then she saw Ben’s signature.
For several seconds, she could not speak.
Her first thought was painful and immediate: Had Ben married Rosie because of money?
Had he been pretending to protect her while secretly participating in the same plan as her parents?
