That sentence stopped Emma.
For years, Emma had believed protecting Rosie meant stepping in whenever someone might hurt her. She suddenly realized that protection could sometimes become another form of control if the person being protected was never allowed to make her own choices.
Before they could say more, Rosie’s parents arrived.
They immediately asked about the document.
When they learned that Ben had shown it to Emma, their attitude changed.
They insisted that the arrangement had been created for Rosie’s benefit. They accused Ben of making matters unnecessarily complicated and suggested that his signature proved he had accepted their plan.
Emma refused to let the conversation continue that way.
