According to his official biography, Osmond’s career eventually grew to include more than 65 albums, while earlier official biographies credit his recording career with more than 100 million records sold worldwide and dozens of gold certifications.
Those numbers reflect a career that continued long after the original teen-idol craze disappeared.
But television soon created another defining chapter.
And this time, his sister Marie was beside him.
Donny and Marie Became a Television Institution
In January 1976, Donny & Marie premiered on television.
The variety program paired Donny with his younger sister Marie Osmond and combined music, comedy and celebrity guests.
Their contrasting musical personalities became part of the show’s identity.
Donny represented rock and pop.
Marie represented country.
Together, they became one of television’s most recognizable brother-and-sister teams.
The program lasted four seasons.
Decades later, Donny admitted that he had originally worried television exposure might damage his music career.
Instead, it helped make both siblings internationally recognizable personalities.
And years later, they would prove that the partnership still had enormous drawing power.
Las Vegas Brought Them Together Again
Donny and Marie reunited professionally for a Las Vegas engagement in 2008.
What was originally expected to be relatively short became something much larger.
Their residency ultimately lasted 11 years.
They performed more than 1,700 shows together before ending the run in 2019.
For many entertainers, that achievement alone could have been the conclusion of a remarkable career.
Donny did something different.
He returned to Las Vegas on his own.
