One asked if someone had been hurt.

Another wanted to know why a woman had just fled the house screaming.

Kayla didn’t answer them.

She simply kept going.

I stood in the doorway watching her disappear down the street.

Then I turned toward my granddaughters.

“What did you give her?”

Jennifer looked at me.

Lizzie smiled.

And for the first time that day, I realized that I had underestimated just how much those girls had understood about the past.
