I became the guardian of my twin granddaughters at 56 after my DIL deserted them because she “wanted a better life”

“My Darling Girls”

Kayla smiled.

“Oh, my darling girls,” she said. “I’m so happy to finally see you.”

Finally?

The word almost made me laugh.

Twenty years.

Twenty years of birthdays.

Twenty Christmas mornings.

Twenty years of school events, illnesses, achievements, disappointments, graduations, and ordinary Tuesday nights.

And she called this “finally”?

Then she began explaining herself.

She said everything that happened years ago was partly their father’s fault because he hadn’t been able to provide the life she believed she deserved.

She said she could only imagine what their grandmother had told them about her.
