Apparently, she had achieved the wealthy lifestyle she had once dreamed about.
And now she wanted the girls to appear in a family photograph with her and her new husband.
Tomorrow.
As though they were props she had suddenly remembered belonged in the picture.
I looked at Jennifer and Lizzie.
I expected them to be angry.

Then she opened it.
And everything changed.
The Bag
I wish I could describe the expression on Kayla’s face accurately.
First, she looked confused.
Then shocked.
Then horrified.
Her mouth opened.
A scream came out.
It was so loud that I instinctively stepped backward.
“What is this?” she shouted.
The girls didn’t answer.
Kayla looked inside the bag again.
Then she dropped it.
Whatever confidence she had walked into our home with was suddenly gone.
She rushed toward the door.
She was so panicked that she didn’t even stop to put her shoes back on.
She ran outside barefoot.
Within moments, neighbors began appearing.
