Nothing had been magically fixed.
The past remained the past.
Leo had still grown up without his mother.
Arthur still carried painful memories.
Goldi still had to earn trust.
Grandma Jo still had to explain why she had kept such an important secret.
But the family had begun something new.
Not perfection.
Not a clean ending.
A beginning.
Arthur eventually realized that his original understanding had been too simple.
Goldi had loved Leo.
She had also made a terrible decision.
She had been frightened by her father.
She had tried to protect her son.
And she had still caused enormous pain.
Two truths could exist at the same time.
Understanding someone’s reasons did not mean pretending their choices caused no damage.
Forgiveness did not mean forgetting.
It meant deciding what to do with the pain.
Leo seemed to understand that better than anyone.
One evening, Arthur asked him whether he was glad he had finally learned the truth.
Leo smiled.
“Yeah.”
“Why?”
“Because before, I had a question with no answer.”
“And now?”
“Now I have an answer with a lot of questions.”
Arthur laughed.
That sounded like adulthood.
