Arthur thought about her answer.

Then he handed her a pen.

“There’s a lot of blank space inside.”

Goldi looked at the card for a long time.

Finally, she wrote:

“I cannot change the years I lost, but if you let me, I will spend every year I have left showing up.”

Leo read the sentence.

Then he took the pen.

Underneath it, he wrote:

“Start with Tuesday. I have bowling at seven.”

Goldi laughed through her tears.

“I’ll be there.”

“Six forty-five,” Leo said.

“I’ll be there at six thirty.”

“That’s too early.”

For the first time in years, the kitchen filled with laughter.
