Civil Protection, forestry personnel, and representatives from local authorities went to the site to conduct inspections and determine the extent of the damage. Vehicles were stopped while the road’s safety was assessed.
The scene caused concern among residents and visitors because the area is located in a mountainous and tourist environment.
But there was something that attracted even more attention.
The fracture did not appear to be a simple surface crack caused by wear and tear on the road.
The photographs show displaced sections of pavement and large pieces of asphalt torn off, while a crack runs practically from one side of the road to the other.
According to reports, the phenomenon was related to the Pernicana fault , linked to the volcanic activity of Mount Etna. The head of Civil Protection in Sicily, Salvo Cocina, explained that the movement was related to the opening of that fault.
The news takes on an even more impressive dimension when you remember where it happened.
Mount Etna is not only one of the most famous volcanoes in Europe. It is an active geological system capable of producing constant movements and transformations in the terrain.
Therefore, when a road begins to open up in that way, the authorities cannot simply observe and wait.
