“Nora, tell me what happened.”
There was a pause.
Then she said the only thing necessary.
“Amelia needs you.”
I immediately called our neighbor across the street, a woman who had known my children practically their entire lives.
Ten minutes later, I was driving toward the wedding venue.
I expected to find Amelia hysterically crying.
Instead, when I arrived, half my extended family was gathered outside the ballroom whispering among themselves.
Nora rushed toward me.
“Where is she?”
“Outside in the garden.”
I headed toward the doors.
Nora grabbed my arm.
“Wait. You need to understand what happened first.”
I turned toward her.
She glanced nervously toward the ballroom.
“After the vows, they had some kind of family ceremony.”
“What kind?”
“A unity candle.”
My stomach tightened.
Nora explained.
“Ryan and Lina had one candle. Amelia had a smaller one. She was supposed to use their flame to light hers.”
