Months later, I was lying on the couch trying not to think about their wedding when my phone rang.
It was my cousin Nora.
She was one of the few relatives who had never told me that I needed to forgive everyone and “move on.”
I answered quietly.
“Hey.”
“Annie…”
The tone of her voice immediately made me sit upright.
“What happened?”
“You’re not going to believe what Amelia just did. You need to come here.”
I glanced toward my other children.
“Why?”
“Because she just stopped the family ceremony in front of everyone.”
I stood.
“What do you mean, stopped it?”
“I mean everyone is standing around staring at her. Ryan looks like he’s been hit by a truck, and your mother apparently doesn’t know what to say.”
That worried me more than anything.
My mother always knew what to say.
“What did Amelia do?”
Nora lowered her voice.
“Annie, just get here.”
