A credible news report may seem boring compared with a viral post.
It might say:
“Officials are investigating an incident reported Tuesday evening. No further details have been released.”
That headline may generate fewer clicks.
But it communicates uncertainty honestly.
A sensational post might instead say:
“BREAKING! JUST NOW! YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED! SEE MORE!”
The second feels exciting.
The first is more useful.
Good journalism is not always the most emotionally stimulating form of communication.
The Problem With Anonymous Claims
Be especially cautious when a headline says something has been “confirmed” but does not identify who confirmed it.
Confirmed by whom?
A family member?
Police?
A hospital?
A company?
A spokesperson?
A witness?
An anonymous source?
The word itself means very little without the identity and credibility of the source.
Rumors Can Cause Real Harm
It is tempting to dismiss online rumors as harmless entertainment.
They are not always harmless.
False reports can damage reputations.
They can cause emotional distress.
They can interfere with investigations.
They can frighten communities.
They can lead people to contact emergency services unnecessarily.
They can place pressure on families already experiencing difficult circumstances.
This is why responsible information sharing matters.

Some people worry that skepticism means ignoring important events.
It does not.
You can pay attention without immediately believing everything.
