A Headline Is a Starting Point, Not Proof

One of the most useful habits people can develop is to stop treating headlines as evidence.

A headline is an invitation to read.

It is not a substitute for the article.

And even the article itself should be examined critically.

Ask:

Who wrote it?

When was it published?

What sources are named?

Are those sources credible?

Does the story quote officials?

Can the information be independently confirmed?

Does the article distinguish facts from speculation?

These questions are especially important when a story is described as breaking.
