Friedman’s unconventionality eventually carried him into politics.
In 2006, he ran for governor of Texas as an independent candidate.

He finished fourth in a six-person race, receiving about 12 percent of the vote.
Although he did not win, the campaign reinforced his position as one of the most unusual public personalities in Texas.
For Friedman, politics became another stage on which he could express his views.
He was not simply trying to imitate conventional politicians.
He was Kinky Friedman.
And that meant the campaign itself became part of his larger cultural identity.
Humor as a Form of Communication
Humor was central to Friedman’s work.
But humor can be misunderstood.
A joke may make people laugh while simultaneously expressing an opinion.
A satirical song may entertain while criticizing social conventions.
