Should it protect society?
Should it deter others from committing similar crimes?
Should it rehabilitate the offender?
Or should it attempt to achieve all of these goals at the same time?
There may never be a perfect answer.
What this case demonstrates, however, is that the consequences of serious crime can be enormous—especially when the person responsible is still very young.
An 86-year sentence is more than a number.
