My Twin Sister Vanished on Our Birthday—Years Later, Her Sweater Revealed a Family Mystery

“Dad.”

Finally, he nodded.

“She came back in 1992.”

I sat down.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

He rubbed his hands together.

“I thought I was protecting the family.”

“You weren’t.”

He looked at me.

“She wanted to come home?”

“Yes.”

“And you turned her away?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I thought everyone had finally learned how to live without her.”

I couldn’t believe those words.

“Everyone?”

“You had moved forward. Your mother was trying to heal.”

“Did Mom tell you she didn’t want Laura back?”

“No.”

“Did I?”

“No.”

“Then you made that decision for everyone.”

He lowered his head.

For the first time, I saw something I had not allowed myself to see before.

My father had been carrying his own regret for decades.

He had made a terrible choice when he was angry, and then another when he was afraid to admit what had happened.

“I was ashamed,” he said.

I nodded slowly.

“Laura was sixteen when she left. She made her own mistake. But you were the parent. You had another chance when she came back.”
