My Son Became an Organ Donor to Save My 5 Year Old Daughter On Her 18th Birthday, She Received a Card That Said, Happy Birthday, Little Sister

“And now you show up? Today? On her birthday?”

“Look, Daphne, I am here because Luke asked me to be.” He held up the wrapped gift. “Not just to deliver a card. To actually be here. I’ve spent years being a coward. I don’t want to spend another day doing that.”

I stared at him. The man who’d walked out, leaving me with a five-year-old and an 18-year-old. The man who’d let our son carry a family on his back.Family support services

“You don’t get to just walk back in, Victor.”

“I know.”

“Hannah doesn’t owe you anything.”

“I know that, too.”

“And Luke isn’t here to hold your hand through this.”

“That’s why I came,” he whispered. “Because he couldn’t be.”

I closed my eyes. I could feel Luke’s presence. My son had planned this. He’d reached across 13 years to put his father on my porch.

Behind me, the door creaked open.

“Mom?” Hannah’s voice was small. “Who is it?”

I turned to my daughter, who stood in the hallway clutching the card, her eyes moving between the stranger and me on the porch.Family

“Mom, please, the guests are asking about you. Tell me what’s happening.”

I reached for her hand and pulled her gently to my side. Victor stepped just a little closer, no further, holding the small wrapped gift as if it might break.

“Hannah, this is your father. And that card… it was from Luke. He wrote it 13 years ago and asked your dad to give it to you today.”

Hannah’s mouth opened, but no sound came. She looked down at the card again, reading it slowly, the tears finally spilling.
