My mother cried.
My father struggled to apologize without explanations.
Rosie listened.
Then she said something none of us expected.
“I may forgive you someday. But forgiveness does not put you back in charge.”
That sentence changed everything.
At the twins’ dedication, Uncle Robert raised his glass.
“Some men become husbands by signing a marriage certificate,” he said.
The room grew quiet.
“Ben became a husband by standing beside Rosie when other people tried to decide her life for her.”
Applause filled the room.
Ben looked uncomfortable.
Rosie looked delighted.
Then she took the microphone from our uncle.
“Ben did not save me,” she said.
The applause stopped.
“He helped me save myself.”
Her voice trembled slightly, but she continued.
“My sister protected me when we were children. Ben protected me when I needed time. But I chose my husband. I chose my home. I chose to become a mother.”
She looked around the room.
“And I choose what happens next.”
This time, the applause was louder.
I looked at my sister holding Hope while Ben cradled Regina against his chest.
