My 13-Year-Old Daughter Spent Three Weeks at Her Dream Summer Camp—Then the Director Told Me She Wasn’t Welcome Back

She explained that there had been “several concerns” involving my daughter.

I immediately asked what those concerns were.

The director mentioned disagreements with other campers, difficulty following certain instructions, and “interpersonal issues.”

I was confused.

“Has she been disciplined?”

“Not formally.”

“Has anyone spoken with her?”

“Her counselors have addressed some concerns.”

“Then why am I only hearing about this now?”

There was another pause.

The director told me that staff had decided it would be best for my daughter not to return.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You’re telling me after three weeks that she’s being removed?”

“Yes.”

“Why wasn’t I contacted earlier?”

The answer was vague.

They believed the situation had developed gradually.

I asked for specific examples.

Again, the explanation was unclear.

That was the moment I became less worried about my daughter’s behavior and more concerned about how the situation had been handled.

The Drive Home

When I arrived at the camp, my daughter was waiting near the entrance with her bags.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

She got into the car without saying much.

For the first twenty minutes, neither of us spoke.

Finally, I asked:

“What happened?”

She stared out the window.

“I don’t know.”

“Did you do something?”

She shook her head.

“Not what they’re saying.”

That sentence stayed with me.

“What are they saying?”

She started crying.

Not loudly.

Just quietly.

Tears rolling down her cheeks while she tried to wipe them away.
