I recognized the building immediately.
It was a community center where I had spent countless afternoons watching my children participate in school and community activities.
There were several cars parked outside.
Cars I knew.
Mark’s SUV.
Sarah’s sedan.
Jason’s truck.
My stomach tightened.
“What is this?”
The officer didn’t answer.
He walked me toward the entrance.
Through the glass doors, I saw movement.
Then the lights suddenly came on.
“HAPPY—”
Jason stopped mid-sentence.
Everyone froze.
The banner behind them read:
HAPPY 60TH, MOM!
Balloons covered the room.
There was a beautiful cake.
Tables were decorated.
And five of my children were standing there.
I stared at them.
“So you were all here.”
Mark stepped forward.
“Mom, wait.”
“I waited four hours.”
His face fell.
“Four hours,” I repeated.
Jason rushed to explain.
“We weren’t ignoring you. We were trying to surprise you.”
Eliza’s eyes filled with tears.
