For four years, I had been sending almost $100,000 back home while serving overseas. Then I came back without telling anyone and found my wife BALD, painfully thin, and washing dishes behind the house.

So I forced a warm fake smile onto my face and took a slow breath.

“I actually came back home with incredible news for everyone,” I said, keeping my voice calm and completely steady.

I deliberately told my greedy mother and sister that my military deployment compensation and back pay had finally been approved by the finance board. I claimed I would soon receive almost $400,000 in direct cash deposits.

Their entire attitude changed instantly, their disgust turning into radiant excitement.

My mother Patricia immediately started talking joyfully about massive renovations for the top floor. Brenda clapped happily while talking about buying a second luxury truck, taking tropical vacations, and going on expensive shopping sprees downtown.

Neither of those women bothered asking why Chloe was trembling uncontrollably or why she could barely stand on her own.

Late that night, after everyone went to bed, I searched the house until I finally found my wife sleeping on a thin mattress inside a dark, damp storage room near the laundry area.

It was not a real bedroom.

It was a cold, filthy storage space filled with dusty cardboard boxes and old lawn equipment.

She slowly sat up beside me on the hard floor, looked nervously around to make sure we were alone, and opened her loose cotton blouse.

That was when I saw a long red surgical biopsy scar stretching across her chest.

“I have severe stage three cancer, Austin,” she whispered softly, her frail voice cracking as tears filled her sunken eyes. “The doctors at the regional clinic found the large tumor almost five months ago.”

Every belief I had about my loving family collapsed in front of me.

Chloe sobbed quietly as she explained that she had begged my mother Patricia for only $300 to see a specialist in the neighboring city. Patricia had refused to give her a single dime, accusing her of pretending to be sick so she could steal my military pay for herself.
