## Tiny Red or Purple Spots Are Different

Not every mark that looks like a bruise is actually a typical bruise.

**Petechiae** are tiny, flat red, purple, or dark spots caused by bleeding from very small blood vessels.

Petechiae can occur for many reasons, including low platelet levels and other medical conditions.

The National Cancer Institute lists petechiae alongside easy bruising and bleeding among possible symptoms of certain leukemias.

## Other Symptoms Deserve Attention
