Those moments may appear ordinary, but for Somboon they represented an entirely different daily life.
Her story also reminds us that rescue does not need to happen only for young animals with decades ahead of them.
An elderly animal can still benefit enormously from comfort, safety and freedom from work.
Even if the remaining time is uncertain, the quality of that time matters.
Somboon could not regain the decades already spent laboring.
But the end of her story did not have to look exactly like the beginning.
At Elephant Nature Park, she was given the opportunity to live as an elderly elephant receiving care rather than as an attraction required to continue earning her keep.
That may be the most important fact of all.
Her rescue in January 2024 did not rewrite her past.
