A Childhood Promise to My Best Friend Led to a Graduation Day We’ll Never Forget

“Exactly. We should not waste it.”

A Promise Worth Keeping

Prom itself was surprisingly ordinary.

There were decorations, music, photographs, and plenty of laughter.

Nobody stopped the evening to make a speech about us.

Nobody needed to.

We were simply two friends enjoying a special night.

When a slow song began, Noah held out his hand.

“Ready?”

I smiled.

“Ready.”

We stepped onto the dance floor.

Within seconds, he stepped on my shoe.

“Ow!”

He laughed.

“That was your fault.”

“How was that my fault?”

“Your shoes are too big.”

I shook my head.

“You’re impossible.”

He smiled.

“Still your friend.”

“Still my friend.”

And we kept dancing.

At that moment, I realized something.

The promise we had made as children was meaningful.

But the choice we made as young adults mattered even more.

We weren’t going to prom because anyone had told us we should.

We weren’t fulfilling an obligation.

We were there because we wanted to be.
